As previously mentioned, I have been working on Vehicles for the purposes of Combat, which necessitates some sort of Standard to make sure that one's vehicle is not impervious to, but unable to harm, others (making the whole process of Combat a little pointless).
Previously I had been working with the Callahan Combat Control (CCC) system, under the impression that (a) it had already been selected as a standard for upcoming conflicts, and (b) that the Terra Combat System (TCS) still required payment. It then turned out that this was not the case, and that others had been designing things with TCS. I made a few enquiries on the matter and it seems to be the case that no standard has really been chosen; thus I am picking the Terra Combat System for use.
Whilst I would by no means be so presumptuous as to suggest that others should use a standard simply because I do, it would be advisable for all of those building vehicles and defensive cannon for the rapidly-approaching War to use the same mechanisms, and decisions must be made - I thus propose general use of the TCS, unless anyone has any objections, and will be making this known in Caledon and Neualtenberg as well.
Incidentally the two systems operate in very similar ways in any case, controlled by and informing with Link Messages, so any craft using CCC can very quickly be converted to TCS. Development packs are available from Cubey Terra's airfield, for which I will provide a SLurl as soon as I am able....
It is of course an acknowledged truism in the Engine industry that Standards are a wonderful thing, as there are so many to choose from...
Quite, they are clearly very popular - if one standard is good, a hundred must be better!
This has got me thinking about a classification system for standards, a way to organize them into a manageable system so we could think about them in a similar fashion and then implement the appropriate ones for use for a given situation.
In all seriousness, I am quite fond of the Terra Combat System for vehicular combat. It seems to be a semi-standard amongst the aircraft set, no doubt due to the trinity of necessary virtues for such standardization: a) it's inexpensive (free, in fact) b) it's easy to install and c) it works.
My chief complaint is that while it provides link messages so that effects may be triggered, it comes with an unmodifiable set of its own. The machinegun sound and particle effects, for example, cannot (to my knowledge) be turned off. This is well enough for a machinegun (surprisingly enough), but in a larger cannon, this might seem inappropriate.
Still, as standards go, I think it is a good one.
Well, the "machinegun" script is optional - it is just smoke and mirrors and doesn't need to be installed at all. For my flyer I have my own set of particles and noises entirely.
Er, unsurprisingly enough, ma'am, you are correct. Please disregard earlier blathery comment about particle effects. I can be such a bubblehead at times....
Miss Malaprop, if you would bsk as to contact me in either this world or that other one that we walk in during the away hours, I would be grateful. As you are aware, there is a war in the offing with a certain Teutonic entity. I have been doing a fair bit of war planning with my counterpart across the water and we need to make sure we are all reading from the same page when it comes to a combat system. For reasons that seem obvious to me (reading your journal as I do, avidly) your name has been associated with the notion of creating a common combat system for both the Caledoni and the NeuAltenbergers. I would wish to ascertain the truth of this, and if so, whether the statement applies to ground combat, aerial combat, both, neither..?
Also, are those bombers of yours ready and scripted? Do we have anything like a scripted steam tank?
I apologize for the rude bombardment of questions, but the time to come to blows with the NeuAltenbergers draws nigh.
